Hartwick Pines State Park

Hartwick PinesHartwick Pines is rich in scenic beauty and different habitats. The principal features of this park are the 49-acre forest of Old Growth Pines and logging museum. There is ample subject matter for the sports person, photographer, or naturalist throughout the year.

With an area of 9,672 acres, Hartwick Pines is one of the largest state parks in the Lower Peninsula. The park’s rolling hills, which are built of ancient glacial deposit, overlook the valley of the East Branch of the AuSable River, four small lakes and unique timber lands. The principal feature of this park is the 49-acre forest of Old Growth Pines which gives the park its name. This forest is a reminder of Michigan’s past importance in the pine lumber industry as well as a source of inspiration for the future of our forests. The park is rich in scenic beauty and because of the different habitats it encompasses, there is ample subject matter for the sports person, photographer, or naturalist throughout the year. The park is open from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. year round.

Hartwick Pines Visitor Center & Logging Museum

The Hartwick Pines Visitor Center, at Hartwick Pines State Park, draws thousands of visitors, campers and school children each year to see one of Michigan’s last stands of majestic old-growth pine forest.

For many visitors, Hartwick Pines is a mystical place, offering a serene escape from the modern world, and the year-round, fully accessible visitor center is a gateway to the towering pine forest and the Hartwick Pines Logging Museum that helps us remember when “White Pine Was King.”

It's time to meet another staff member. This is Macy and she is one of our state workers. This is what she has to say about her job: "I work in the contact station at Hartwick Pines State Park. While working in the contact station I register and check in campers. I also sell recreation passports, ice and firewood. My favorite thing about my job is meeting everyone that comes into the park. Outside of work I enjoy reading, painting and other crafts. I also enjoy taking walks and spending time with my dogs and family."

Macy Hi! My sister and I were there last week camping and she checked me in on Monday. The staff at Hartwick Pines are the best, even back at the visitors center. I love that place.
