Hartwick Pines State Park

Hartwick PinesHartwick Pines is rich in scenic beauty and different habitats. The principal features of this park are the 49-acre forest of Old Growth Pines and logging museum. There is ample subject matter for the sports person, photographer, or naturalist throughout the year.

With an area of 9,672 acres, Hartwick Pines is one of the largest state parks in the Lower Peninsula. The park’s rolling hills, which are built of ancient glacial deposit, overlook the valley of the East Branch of the AuSable River, four small lakes and unique timber lands. The principal feature of this park is the 49-acre forest of Old Growth Pines which gives the park its name. This forest is a reminder of Michigan’s past importance in the pine lumber industry as well as a source of inspiration for the future of our forests. The park is rich in scenic beauty and because of the different habitats it encompasses, there is ample subject matter for the sports person, photographer, or naturalist throughout the year. The park is open from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. year round.

Hartwick Pines Visitor Center & Logging Museum

The Hartwick Pines Visitor Center, at Hartwick Pines State Park, draws thousands of visitors, campers and school children each year to see one of Michigan’s last stands of majestic old-growth pine forest.

For many visitors, Hartwick Pines is a mystical place, offering a serene escape from the modern world, and the year-round, fully accessible visitor center is a gateway to the towering pine forest and the Hartwick Pines Logging Museum that helps us remember when “White Pine Was King.”

An amazing team effort between park staff and volunteers to get a section of the AuSable River Trail back into shape! Staff and volunteers have spent many hours this past week hauling and placing logs, sand, & gravel to bring a very poor section of the trail back into shape!

Want to help? We will be meeting monthly for volunteer trail projects! Next months trail project will be posted soon so stay tuned!

This looks fantastic! Took a hike there last week and noticed the work in progress thank you for the hard labors for all of us hikers to enjoy!

Yeah!! Wanted to help with this trail as it is one of my favorites in the area, but was out of town so I wasn't able to. Thank you all for helping make this section of trail doable again for us AuSable Trail lovers.

Thank you for doing this! Just took this trail with my boyfriend for our first time today and we were so grateful for this beautiful part of the trail.

This is terrific 🤗 thank you. Any chance in the future the trail & the bog deck will be restored? The bog is a real gem, I love seeing all the carnivorous plants there.

Thank you!!!!

Wow,, looks awesome ❤️

I'd love to go. If I walk in, what happens if I get too sore to walk out? Is there a way to rescue seniors.
