Hartwick Pines State Park

Hartwick PinesHartwick Pines is rich in scenic beauty and different habitats. The principal features of this park are the 49-acre forest of Old Growth Pines and logging museum. There is ample subject matter for the sports person, photographer, or naturalist throughout the year.

With an area of 9,672 acres, Hartwick Pines is one of the largest state parks in the Lower Peninsula. The park’s rolling hills, which are built of ancient glacial deposit, overlook the valley of the East Branch of the AuSable River, four small lakes and unique timber lands. The principal feature of this park is the 49-acre forest of Old Growth Pines which gives the park its name. This forest is a reminder of Michigan’s past importance in the pine lumber industry as well as a source of inspiration for the future of our forests. The park is rich in scenic beauty and because of the different habitats it encompasses, there is ample subject matter for the sports person, photographer, or naturalist throughout the year. The park is open from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. year round.

Hartwick Pines Visitor Center & Logging Museum

The Hartwick Pines Visitor Center, at Hartwick Pines State Park, draws thousands of visitors, campers and school children each year to see one of Michigan’s last stands of majestic old-growth pine forest.

For many visitors, Hartwick Pines is a mystical place, offering a serene escape from the modern world, and the year-round, fully accessible visitor center is a gateway to the towering pine forest and the Hartwick Pines Logging Museum that helps us remember when “White Pine Was King.”

It's Throwback Thursday! We are turning this one into a trivia question. First person to comment with the correct answer gets free snowshoe rentals this weekend..... Just kidding! Snowshoe rentals are always free at the Visitor Center 🙂 Winner gets bragging rights 🤩

Who are the three men in this photo? Hints: They have A LOT to do with the history of Hartwick Pines and their names are still seen all over the Grayling area.

Great job, everyone! Congrats to Hilary Wells who was the first to answer correctly! The three men from left to right are : Nels Michelson, Rasmus Hanson, and Ernst Salling. Together, they made up the Salling, Hanson, & Co. This company owned and logged the land that would become Hartwick Pines State Park. Their office and saw mill was located in Grayling.

I would guess three timber guys.

Nels Michelson on left. Ed Hartwick middle?

Hanson, Michelson, and Salling?
